MEDIA TEXT EXAM - MS RODDEN

1.Media Forms
How does the text both subvert (different) and reinforce (similar) the typical conventions for a newspaper front page? (12 marks)
This newspaper front page is in many ways subvert compared to other well known newspaper front covers. The 'i' newspaper's master head is subvert compared to other newspapers as it is on the side, where as other newspapers have the master head as a front view. The master head is usually the first thing the readers see. This is common on newspapers such as Metro and The Guardian, this is an effective way of presenting the master head as it is the first thing to attract the readers attention.
This newspaper cover is also subvert as it more like a magazine cover rather than a newspaper front cover. This is obvious as there are more pictures and a variety of headlines. Other newspapers such as Metro usually have one main story on the front page with a summery in small print(font) around the picture and the large font sub-heading.
This newspaper is unique compared to the rest as it has got a enigma to it. Therefore, the 'i' magazine gives a Barthes narrative enigma, leaving the audience members wanting to know more about the main story about the 'royal party' as well as the smaller story's around the edge of the front cover.

2.Media InstitutionsWhy might the ‘i’ newspaper have been successful in a newspaper industry that has generally been in decline? (12 marks)
The 'i' newspaper has been successful in the newspaper industry compared to others due to many reasons, one of these reason is the social demographics. Other newspapers that have been decline are most targeting to an older/working class society where as this newspaper targets towards a younger target audience therefore it will have more readers. Also, the format of the 'i' newspaper is more like a magazine therefore it attracts the younger target audience more and draws them in.

3.Media Audiences
What would you expect the ‘i’ newspaper’s target audience to be based on this front page?(12 marks)

The target audiences that seem to be intended for this target audience is a teenage/young adult audience, assisting of the age of 17-28. This is once again relating the the social demographics as this newspapers targets towards a target group of D's and E's, where as other newspapers are targeted to audiences such as C's and B's. Also the individuals psycho-graphics such as lifestyles, aspirations, values determine whether they read this newspaper or not, as these are more important compared to the traditional classifications such as age, gender and geographical location.

4.Media Representations
How is Britain represented in this text? (12 marks)

Britain is represented as patriotic and gives a sense of pride for the country. This is shown through the picture that they have chosen to use as all the people in the picture are smiling and the countries international colours are used effectively also, they are all toasting. Moreover, the toast could suggest that they are saying 'cheers/thanks' to Britain therefore giving Britain a good name and making it look like it is a very friendly and grand country to live in. The long shot of the grand stage shows how special the country is, also the mid shot of the Queen shows the over all atmosphere in Britain and how people feel, for example the Queen in smiling therefore showing that Britain has got a happy and cheerful atmosphere. The typography and use of colours for the word 'ROYAL' shows how grand it is and the representative colours for Britain therefore showing the united community in the UK and how everybody comes together.
