FISH TANK - REVIEW

The British film 'Fish Tank' is directed by Andrea Arnold. Andrea Arnold has also directed British films such as 'Wuthering Heights' (2011) and 'Red Road' (2006). Fish Tank was released in 2009 and was premiered at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival, where Andres Arnold won the Jury Prize. A year later (2010) the film also went on to win the BAFTA Award for outstanding British film.
The movie is about a 15 year old girl called Mia, she is a lonely girl who has not got much guidance in society however she is looking for a break through. Mia is easy too relate to for many British teen girl as she is not familiarized with the finer things in life and is let down by many characters which she trusted and relied on through out the movie.

The main stares or the movie and Micheal Fassbender as Conner and Katie Jarvis as Mia. The movie is based around Mia and the tough times she is having to go through. Throughout the whole movie it is clear that Mia does not have any friends, she is constantly ignored bu her alcoholic partying mother and is thought of as a 'freak' and 'weirdo' by others around her estate. Katie Jarvis plays out Mia exceptionally well considering she has never starred in a movie before. Katie's emotions, dance skills and characteristics are consistent throughout the whole movie. However watchers are not familiar with Katie Jarvis as an actor as she was chosen on a train station to star in the film, despite this Katie Jarvis is an amazing actor and does the role of Mia justice.
Mia has not got much hope in the events of her life however she does not quit and carried on trying despite the obstacle that come her way. Although Mia has been kicked out of school she finds hope in her dancing which she practiced in a spare room over her flat. However everything seems to go down hill when the character Conner come on the scene as Mia's mum's new boyfriend. although Mia first thinks he is just another one of her mums one night stands she ends up building a strong bond with Conner. During the first half of the movie Conner is a sort of father figure to Mia and her younger sister as he supports the family and this seems as if Mia's life is finally on the mend, however this immediately disappears once her and Conner kiss. He then leaves the family, leaving Mia's mum in deep depression turning to more alcohol and Mia furious because she believed she loved him and thought they could run away and live happily ever after as she puts all her trust in him and gave him all she had. Mia therefore follows Conner to his house to realize that he has got a wife and young child. This angers Mia even more causing her to kidnap Conner's daughter.

There is a great twist in the plot as Mia's life changes from nothing to finally having what she wants but then changing back to having nothing however Mia does not give up and therefore towards the end of the movie as her life is finally getting back on track as she leaves the estate with her boyfriend the film finishes. Mia strongly connotes the films title "Fish Tank". this is because Mia's life is the same as that of a fish in a tank. Just like a fish trying to escape, whenever Mia gets the oppurtunity to escape and be free there is always something which holds her back and comes in the way therefore she feels stuck and suffocated in a Fish Tank which turns out to be her estate.
The genre of the film is Drama. Mia's life is full of drama, some could also literally say that her life is the definition of drama as there is not a moment of peace and she gets treated as a fool.

The soundtrack for Fish Tank is versatile as most of the music played is parallel as there is a lot of street dance  throughout the movie and therefore we hear a large amount of rap, R&B and hip hop music. Although there is parallel music there is a great deal of contrapuntal sounds which sometimes do not relate with what is happening in the movie.

I believe the film Fish Tank is based around teenage drama's which could occur in a teenagers everyday life and therefore it's main target audience is for people aged between 15-25. In my opinion although the film is directed very well by Andrea Arnold and people are able to relate to the events which occur I believe that the plot was very predictable and there was not much of a strong story line to the film. Therefore I would give the film 6 out of 10.
