ILL MANORS TRAILER ANALYSIS - MS RODDEN

  1. What are the typical codes and conventions of film trailers - what information is usually provided?Trailers usually have the directors name, release dates, main stars, taglines, film's title, a voice over usually there to represent the main characters in the movie and enigma codes as they leave audience members wondering and intrigued to find out what is going to happen further on into the movie. All of these things are there to give the audience a snippet of what is to come in the movie and to help them make their mind up to whether they will watch the movie or not as some people do not like watching certain types of movies.
  2. How are trailers distributed?
Trailers are distributed by the same studios that produced them.
  3. How does Ill Manors use trailer conventions?
Ill manors uses many different trailer conventions. These trailer conventions are mainly used to create enigma codes causing members of the audience to want to watch the movie in order for them to find out more about the interesting story line. One way this is done is through the voice over as if draws watchers in therefore them wanting to watch further on.
  4. Who is the target audience? Does it have a unique selling point or use particular techniques to appeal to the audience? Consider the way the scenes are edited together – does the trailer give away any clues about the narrative? Are the main stars visible in the trailer? Is there information about the director of the film? Is there information about the release date? Is a narrator’s voice-over used?
I think the target audience for Ill Manors is teenagers and young adults from the ages of 16-28. Although the certificate for the movie is 18, it could also be suitable for 16 year old. Also the movie is acceptable for these ages and not younger as it includes swearing, violence, drug use and sexual references. The trailer gives many clues to what may happen in the movie, as it shows the main characters smoking drugs and acting in a very unappealing way therefore giving the audience ideas of what the narrative may consist of such as swearing, violence and drugs. The release date for the movie is shown towards the end of the trailer as this helps the audience remember the date therefore being able to watch the movie at the right date.
  5. How has the genre of the film been represented through characters, settings, lighting, colour, music, camera shots/movements/angles and editing?
The genre of the film is a teen urban drama; the genre is represented through the characters, costumes, actions and lifestyles. The characters were presented through the trailer in a stereotypical way as they were shown in tracksuits, hoodys etc therefore representing a criminal and rough lifestyle. Th music that is played is mainly urban therefore connoting youngsters and teenagers, again representing the genre and target audience. There are many different settings that are shown in the trailer such as an ally, house and police station. These settings could represent a complex narrative and connote that there is much more to the narrative than what we have been shown. The camera movements focus on certain characters in particular therefore showing that there is much more to the characters than what is being shown also showing their lives are as complex as the narrative.
